The second-closest planet to the Sun, Venus is set into the fence at Broxburn Academy. The dark blue rectangular piece of stone features a series of holes, rising upwards from left to right, suggesting the transit of Venus across the sky. The Earl of Buchan used Venus as a starting point to calculate the distance of the planets from the Sun when he created his solar system in 1776. |
