As the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury is just outside Broxburn Academy, on a triangular area of grass off the Cardross Rd. The sculpture was inspired by information supplied by the Voyager space mission in 1977 - a series of square images showing that Mercury's surface resembled the Moon, but largely made of iron. Cast at Ballantyne's foundry in Bo'ness, the iron plates are placed on top of 30cm concrete plinths.
